Consistently an academic powerhouse, Providence High School in South Charlotte is obviously preparing its students for college and beyond. With a cumulative score of 1693 (math + reading + writing), Providence High School topped all public high schools in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools CMS), Union County schools, and other county systems in the Charlotte region. To maintain this top-ranked public school status year in and year out is quite a feat! (See table of SAT scores below)
Providence High School Compared to National and State Scores
Providence High School in South Charlotte leads area schools on SAT scores – the school exceeded the national SAT average of 1500 by 193 points, and the North Carolina SAT average of 1475 by 218 points. The average CMS SAT score was 1482, and the average Union County Schools score was 1518. The College Board reported a decline in scores nationally, and this decline was reflected slightly in CMS and state scores. South Charlotte High School Students Outrank National, State and District SAT Scores
Students enrolled in South Charlotte high schools consistently outranked their peers in the Charlotte Region, with all six South Charlotte high schools ranking in the top 10. This high performance mirrors the South Charlotte high schools’ high performance on 2011 end-of-course exams. The SAT score rankings of the six South Charlotte High Schools are as follows:

- Myers Park High School (#2)
- Ardrey Kell High School (#4)
- South Mecklenburg High School (#6)
- Butler High School (Matthews) (#7)
- East Mecklenburg High School (#10)
